TDM - Statement of Future Direction

Written by John Pocknell

Toad Data Modeler is a low-cost data modelling solution which fits the need of organizations who need to bring visibility of the data model and data modelling capabilities to their developers and DBAs without the expense of extending their existing enterprise modelling solution.

Toad Data Modeler is based on the successful Case Studio 2 product from Charonware based in Ostrava in the Czech Republic; as a result of an acquisition made by Quest Software in August 2006.

Quest Software itself is not new to data modelling having offered a product called QDesigner (a rebranded version of the PowerDesigner enterprise modelling product), through an OEM agreement with Sybase, over the last 5 years.

With Toad Data Modeler, however, we control the future direction and development of the product and also the degree to which we integrate it with our flagship Toad for Oracle product, hugely popular amongst Oracle developers and DBAs alike over the last 10 years. We can therefore offer a far greater commitment to our customers in terms of features, intuitive workflow and ongoing support.

Charonware had already planned to extend the capabilities of Case Studio 2 to include Logical and UML modelling but its architecture would have placed limitations on fulfilling that vision.

A successor to Case Studio 2 was therefore evolved with an improved architecture which would better accommodate the future requirements of the product.

Current Release:

Our intention is to continue the evolution of the Toad Data Modeler product, based on this new architecture, in order to provide customers with a low cost solution not only for Physical Data Modeling but also Logical Data Modeling as well as a host of other improvements.

The current release of Toad Data Modeler, version 3.0 includes the following key additions :

  • Logical Data Modeling
  • Compare and Synchronize
  • Generation of Alter Script for Database (initially Oracle 10g only)
  • Integrated Version Management
  • Updated UI including Multi-Level Undo, Loupe, Overview Panes and more
  • Unicode support

There is no price change for this release.

Following releases will also continue to have tighter integration with the Toad family of products.

Platform Support

Since version 3.0 is a re-write of the version 2.x product with a different architecture, it has given us an opportunity to evaluate database platform support on a customer needs basis.

A large number of platforms supported in version 2.x are now rarely used and will therefore not be supported in version 3.0. (e.g. Microsoft Access 97, MySQL 3.23, InterBase 4, etc)

Platform support for version 3.0, based on prioritization from customers surveyed in our Modeling Community*, will be as follows:

  • Oracle 9i
  • Oracle 10g
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005
  • PostgreSQL 8.1
  • PostgreSQL 8.2
  • MySQL 5.0
  • Sybase 12.5
  • Sybase 15.0

For the following minor release, 3.1, we anticipate support for at least the following platforms :

  • Access 2003
  • DB2 UDB 8.0

We will continue to research customers and market demand and additional database platforms will be added in subsequent releases of Toad Data Modeler.

For database platforms not yet supported by Toad Data Modeler v3.0, we would recommend customers continue to use Toad Data Modeler v2.25 or Case Studio 2.

*Quest Software Modeling Community

In March 2007, we launched a brand new community web portal to serve the needs of customers using and interested in modelling solutions.

As a member of this community, members have free access to various sources of information (Discussion Forum, Flash movies, Document Library etc.), get the latest news and releases of the product, and get in touch with our Toad Data Modeler developers.

Members can also participate in a very active beta testing programme with testers able to communicate directly with the development team. This programme is based on our successful Toad for Oracle beta programme which has been running for about 10 years.

At the start of the Toad Data Modeler 3.0 beta testing programme, we wanted to see what database platforms were of most interest to our customers and it is this survey which forms the basis of our ongoing platform support. You will find the link to this survey on the Modeling Community home page.

If you would like to express your database platform support requirements or pass on any other comments or suggestions regarding Toad Data Modeler, please subscribe to our Modeling Community by clicking this link : or contact me at
